The Two Pure Spirits  - The Two Paracletes

Greek is a very weak word when it comes to talking about the spirit. Greek only has one word Pneuma which can mean several things.

Pneuma can be translated as

  • a ghost, or phantom
  • breath
  • wind
  • demon
  • angel
  • spirit –a living being without a body
  • The animating factor in a body –a man’s spirit.
  • Yah (God) is a pneuma
  • Azazel (Satan) is a pneuma

The Pure Spirit is called to Pneuma to Hagios the spirit, "the pure one". A few days before he died, Yahshauh said he was going to the Father and would petition him to send  another Pure Spirit like the one that was with Yahshuah.

The Greek word for another is Allos and means one of the same kind. Yahshuah identified the one he was requesting as a Pneuma, so the first one also had to be a Pneuma.

And I will request of the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you into the age. (Jn 14:16)

What the Paraclete (The Pure Spirit) is Not

  • Not an Advocate
  • Not a Comforter
  • Not a Prophet (foretelling the future)
  • Not a Helper/Friend of the world

Jerome, in the 4th Century, translated Paraclete as Advocate, but "the Paraclete does not intercede for the disciples, or for Yahshuah. Nor is he a spokesman in defense of the disciples, rather he speaks through the disciples (Jn 15:26).…Moreover "helper, friend" does not do justice to the Paraclete's role in the world”  (Appendix V Anchor Bible)

The Paraclete is not a friend, or helper, of the world, his words prosecute the world.  But in the ministry of prosecution remember believers are commanded to always speak the truth in a spirit of humility and love, but nonetheless if the Paraclete lives in you, it is to  convict the world of sin and injustice and judgment.

Often Paraclete is mistranslated as Comforter, but "No Paraclete passage speaks of the Paraclete in the role of consoling, or comforting, the disciples"

"In the Old Testament  the Spirit of God comes upon the prophets that they may speak the words of God to men". (Ibid. A.B.)

In John 16:13  the Paraclete declares (anagello). The Greek word for angel is aggelos. One of the roles of angels in the Apocalyptic books in the Dead Sea Scrolls was teaching.

When Yah spoke to Moses from the burning bush it was through the voice of an angel

Moses heard what appeared to be the "voice of God", saying, " I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob". (Exodus 1:3-6) It even says that "Moses was afraid to look at God".  (Ex 3:2)

When God Spoke to Moses on Mt Sianai it was throught the voice of an angel

This is he (Moses) who was among the Congregation in the Desert, together with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai. (Acts  7:38)

The Paraclete is associated with wisdom Luke 21:15 I will give you a mouth and wisdom.

The Paraclete is Not the Holy Spirit

It is my conclusion that the translators have erred in connecting the Paraclete with The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the power of Yah. It cannot be separated from Yah and is not a person. Yah is one, with no division of persons. The Holy Spirit is called the finger of Yah, or the hand of Yah. Your finger, or hand, is not a separated person.

By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the fleeing serpent (Job 26:13)

He created the universe with his spirit. He created animals and humans and spirits. Two of those spirit beings were sent to do the work of paracletes.

The Paraclete requisitioned by Yahshuah and sent by Yahshuah is  a messenger spirit sent to interpret the sayings of Yahshuah to believers, and to preserve and call to mind the words he spoke and to speak through the believers.

I believe the Greek word Parakletos should be translated as "Interpreter-Historian-Orator-Spirit"

Here are some notes on spirit from http://www.ntwords.com/spirit.htm

 PNEUMA:  SPIRIT

Note that pneuma is always in the neuter gender whether it refers to God, the Pure Spirit, the human spirit or any other kind of spirit. "Pneuma" is one of several Greek nouns (nomos, "law," is another) whose use of a definite article in Greek corresponds identically to English usage. When it is present in the Greek text it should also be included in the English translation. If omitted in the Greek text it should be omitted in English. The presence of an article, adjective or other modifier with the word pneuma shows that it refers to a living being, or is used figuratively.

USE OF THE WORD PNEUMA IN THE SEPTUAGINT

The Hebrew word ruwach (spirit) is usually translated into the Greek Septuagint as pneuma.  Ruwach can mean either breath or spirit, depending upon the context.

Also, ruwach is sometimes used figuratively, as in Isa.11.2: "...and the spirit (ruwach) of Yahweh will rest on him, the spirit (ruwach) of wisdom and understanding, the spirit (ruwach) of counsel and strength, the spirit (ruwach) of knowledge.

PNEUMA IS USED TO DESCRIBE:

1) God
2) God's messengers (angels),
3) unclean or evil spirits (including Satan -Azazel)

PNEUMA IN REFERENCE TO GOD

In Jn.4.24: "God is spirit (pneuma), and those who worship him must worship him  in spirit (pneuma) and truth. Note: God does not HAVE  a spirit, God IS (a) spirit.  He is the " Father of spirits"    (Heb.12:9)

PNEUMA IN REFERENCE TO THE DEVIL

In Eph.2.1-2: " You who were dead in your offenses and wrongdoings, in which you then walked according to this age of the human world, according to the prince, the ruler of the air, the spirit (pneuma) which is now operating in the disobedient ones." (the prince, the ruler of the air, refers to  Azazel (Satan) the ruler of this world (cosmos)

PNEUMA IN REFERENCE TO DEVILS (demons)

Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven   ( Luke 10:20)

PNEUMA IN REFERENCE TO ANGELS

Yah “makes his angels spirits "  (Heb.1.7)

 HAGIOS PNEUMA

This expression has traditionally been translated as "the Holy Spirit" or simply "holy spirit" depending upon the translators' opinions on whether it referred to a person, the Pure (Holy) Spirit. They did not realize that the usage (or not) of the Greek definite article with "pneuma" clearly shows to which usage the text refers:

1) When a definite article is used with hagios pneuma it always refers to the person called "the Pure Spirit," or
2) When no definite article or other modifier is used with hagios pneuma it always refers in some way to a characteristic of "pure spirit" in a human.

HAGIOS PNEUMA REFERRING TO THE PURE SPIRIT

The Pure Spirit is described in three ways

a) as God's or Yahshuah's emissary,
b) as "the Pure Spirit," or
c) as "the Spirit."

This can be seen in Yahshuah's baptism, in which the Pure Spirit is described in all three ways.

a) "theou pneuma" (God's Spirit) in Mt.3.16, descending

b) "to hagios pneuma" (the Pure Spirit) in Lk.3.22, and descending in a bodily shape like a dove.
c) "to pneuma" (the Spirit) in Mk.1.10,12  descending like a dove and Jn.1.32,33.

John saw the spirit descending like a dove .

Likewise, in Matthew's discussion of "contemptuous speech" (blasphemy) in Mt.12.28-31, the Pure Spirit is again described in all three ways:

a) "theou pneuma" (God's Spirit) in verse 28. I cast out devils by the spirit of God
b) "to hagios pneuma" (the Pure Spirit) in verse 32.  whosever speaks against the Pure Spirit shall not be forgiven
c) "to pneuma" (the Spirit) in verse 31. Whoever blasphemes against the spirit shall not be forgiven

AS AN EMISSARY OF GOD OR YAHSHUAH

a) "theou pneuma" (God's Spirit) in Mt.3.16, 12.18,28,
b) "patros pneuma" (the Father's Spirit) in Mt.10.20. when you are in jail, the spirit of your father will speak through you.
c) "kuriou pneuma" (the Master's Spirit) in Lk.4.18 The spirit of the Lord is upon me

THE PURE SPIRIT IS CALLED "TO HAGIOS PNEUMAOr  "TO PNEUMA TO HAGIOS"

The presence of the definite article shows that reference is to a specific person, "the Pure Spirit."

THE PURE SPIRIT IS ALSO CALLED  "TO PNEUMA” (THE SPIRIT)

The presence of the definite article and the context show that this refers to the Pure Spirit. When "hagios pneuma” occurs without the definite article or other modifier, it always refers to something pure given to and received by a human." To pneuma (the [Pure] Spirit) occurs in context with hagios pneuma (pure spirit.

In Jn.1.32-33:
"And John (the baptizer) testified saying, 'I observed the Spirit coming down out of heaven as a dove, and it stayed on him (Yahshuah); and I did not recognize him. But the [one] having sent me to baptize in water, that one said to me, "On whomever you see the Spirit coming down and staying on him, this one is baptizing in pure spirit

Most English translations render this, "baptizon en pneumati hagio"  as "baptism in the Holy Spirit," adding the definite article even though it is not present in the Greek. Yahshuah immersed in pure spirit in Mt.3.11, Mk.1.8, Lk.3.16 and Jn.1.33.

          The Problem

The problem is with a word that can mean so many things, how does a translator know which word to use? He, or she, must look at the context. However, often the context is a grey area and then the translator must make a choice. If the translator is approaching the text with a theology already in place, he, or she, will translate Pneuma to fit their theology. This leads me to a couple of disturbing translations. There are two phrases that translators seem to have approached with a preconceived theology. One is

                                                       ho pneuma tes aletheia

There are four words here, but all the translators leave out the word tes which is the Genitive form of the article the.  It should be translated the spirit of the truth, but everyone translates it as the spirit of truth. There is quite a difference.

In all current  English translations it sounds like Truth is a spirit, but in the correct  translation the spirit belongs to the Truth . Truth is the master and the spirit is his servant, or emissary.

For example Yahshuah said I am the truth. So the Spirit of the Truth would be an emissary who serves Yahshuah. To complicate matters even more, the current translators say the Spirit of Truth is the Holy Spirit. To arrive at this conclusion they again leave out a word. They mistranslate

                                                       to pneuma to hagios

They leave out the Greek definite article to (singular-nominative-neuter) meaning the.  Correctly translated it would read the spirit , the pure one

Here is What Yahshuah said about the Spirit of the Truth

Joh 14:15  "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Paraclete (Interpreter-Historian-Orator-Spirit), that  it may be with you forever;”

John 14:17  "the Spirit of the truth, whom the world does not have the power to receive, because it neither beholds it nor knows it.  But you know it because it dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you bereaved; I will come to you”.

Joh 14:26  "But the Paraclete (Interpreter-Historian-Orator-Spirit), the Spirit, the pure one ,  whom the Father will send in My name, that one will teach you all and will cause you to remember all which I said to you.

John 15:26 "When the Paraclete (Interpreter-Historian-Orator-Spirit) I will send you from the Father comes--the Spirit of  the Truth issuing from the Father--it will confirm everything about me.

John 16:7  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Paraclete (Interpreter-Historian-Orator-Spirit) will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send it to you.
And when it  comes, it will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Joh 16:12  Moreover, I have much to say to you: but ye cannot comprehend it now.

Joh 16:13  But when the Spirit of the truth shall come, it  will lead you into all the truth.

All the truth of what Yahshuah taught, it
will fully explain every thing in the words of Yahshuah that may now appear hard, dark, or difficult to you;

For it will not speak from its own mind; but whatever it hears, that will it speak.

It will teach nothing new, or contrary, to what Yahshuah taught you:

and it will make known to you things to come

Things to come about  ho erchomenos (about the coming one) -the return of Yahshuah. The Pure Spirit is not a spirit of prophecy. The Spirit does not reveal all truth in the world to men, but it leads them to all the truth as taught by the Messiah; especially about the return of the Messiah. It does not introduce new doctrines, commandments, rituals, alternate ways to be saved, or mystical teachings, nor give a road map of the future. Its mission is to explain clearly what Yahshuah taught. It is an interpreter, an historian and an annonucer.

It will glorify me; because it will receive of what is mine, and will show it to you.   Whatever the Father has, is mine: therefore said I to you that it  will receive of what is mine, and will show it to you

           QUESTIONS

How was the pneuma dwelling with the apostles and how did they know it? It was a voice.

The first paraclete/pneuma was resting on Yahshuah. It  spoke through Yahshauh. Yahshuah said his words were pneuma . They heard the father's voice coming from the pneuma.

How did Yahshuah get this pneuma?

At his baptism at the Jordan River, the Father sent down a pneuma, a pure spirit. John the Baptizer said he saw the pneuma, it looked like a dove descending and the pneuma rested and stayed on Yahshuah.

Will the believers get the same pneuma that Yahshuah had?

Just before his death, Yahshuah promised he would not leave his followers without help, but would petition the father to send another pneuma which would dwell in them until the end of the age. Not the same one but another one with the Father's voice.

Did Yahshuah return as the New Paracete?

No, he said it would come in his name, as his emissary, it would direct people to his words (not the whole Bible but just his words), it would bring yahshuah's teachings and glorify Yahshuah but it is not Yahshuah in spirit form. It is an angel. Yahshua reqisitioned the angel from th Father and Yahshuah brought it to his disciples and said it is available to all  believers who petition the Father for it.

The New Paraclete's  Mission is to

·         aid the believers in recalling word for word everything the Father had spoken through Yahshuah.

·         To clear up the parables and dark sayings  Yahshuah spoke that they did not understand

·         to explain everything about the return of Yahshuah

·         to explain everything about sin

·         to explain everything about obtaining righteousness

·         to explain everything about the fall of Azazel (Satan), the ruler of this world

Yahshuah Baptized His Followers with the Second Paraclete/Pure Spirit

In John 20:22 Yahshuah said to the ten Apostles  and other disciples in a closed room.

"Peace be with you. As my Father hath sent me, I also send you. And as he said these things, he breathed on them, and said to them: Receive ye the Pure Spirit."

That night, Yahshuah in that closed room "spirit baptized" the ten plus. He inspired, or blew into, them the second paraclete, the second Pure Spirit.

They had already been born again by hearing, believing in, and obeying Yahshuhah's  pneuma words, and now they were receiving the baptism of the second Pure Spirit indweling them. They were told to wait in Jerusalem until they received another gift -power

   In Conclusion

Yah, the almighty heavenly father, is a pneuma and all holy. He is the father of all pneumas (some are pure ones and some have rebelled). He sent down a Pure Spirit at the Jordan River that rested on Yahshuah throughout his ministry.

Yahshuah said when he reached heaven, he would petition the father to send another pure spirit to dwell inside each of his followers. These two pure spirits come from Yah, but they are not Yah, they are emissaries. The first served Yah and descended on Yahshuah, the second serves Yahshuah. He is the emissary of Yahshuah, the Emissary of the Truth.

When Yahshuah returned from heaven to the closed room, He baptized his first followers with the Second Pure Spirit by breathing on them, and wants to baptize you with it too. He said ask our heavenly Father to give you this other Pure Spirit –the emissary of the truth.

Yahshuah said:
"If you then, being fallible, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father who is in Heaven give the Pure Spirit to those who ask Him?" (Luke 11:13)

Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened.
